The Cardboard Box is a tool in Streets of Rogue which will completely disguise and hide the player from NPCs as long as they don't move.
Cardboard Box will be removed upon:
- Attacking.
- Taking damage.
- Talking to NPCs.
- Being touched by NPCs.
- Teleporting.
Tips and Strategies[]
- Using the Cardboard Box disguise will let you move around freely in front of Security Cameras and Cop Bots without raising an alarm or making them confiscate items or deport you or even turning them hostile, respectively.
- This item is very much useful in Uptown, allowing you to walk under the Cop Bots without them catching you and confiscating your stuff or deporting you, as long you're hiding in the box. Note that using box will be useless if a Cop Bot locked on you already.
- The Hacker is grateful for this item while doing the big quest, Hack the Planet. Allowing the hacker to slip past the Cop Bots hunting down the Laptop user. Without turning them Hostile while hiding in the cardboard box.
- Killer Robot will become harmless with Box disguise. However, it will keep walking towards you, and your disguise will be removed upon being touched.
- If an NPC walks nearby or touches your Cardboard Box while you are hiding, the item will be removed from your inventory and you will be uncovered immediately. If you are trespassing, the NPC will also instantly become hostile toward you. This happens even if you're staying still.
- Because of this, it is highly recommended to memorize the routes of NPCs before attempting to use the cardboard box, staying out of their path and only moving when not in sight.
- Taking damage while using the Cardboard Box will also consume the item and remove it from your inventory. It is not recommended to use the Cardboard Box in rooms without any NPCs especially in Industrial Hideouts where there are a lot of traps. It's a good idea to put the box in your numbered toolbar to quickly unequip the Cardboard Box in empty rooms and re-equip it only when near NPCs or Security Cameras.
- While using the Cardboard Box, Hostile NPCs will only attack the player whilst moving if they're trespassing. This is good to keep in mind as you can more quickly sneak past NPCs who have become hostile in the streets, and without the need to wait for them to pass. This can also be utilized to quickly lose any pursuers by breaking line of sight and putting the box on so long as the Hostile NPC has not witnessed you using the Cardboard Box or has not discovered you using one once before.
- Only NPCs who are Hostile, Annoyed or whose property you are trespassing on will remove your Cardboard Box when touched. Non-Hostile or Friendly NPCs can be freely moved past without fear of discovery.
- Cardboard Boxes will protect you from Hostile NPCs who can see you from a building, however they will still become hostile if you go indoors, even if you are using the Cardboard Box.
- NPCs that start out hostile (notably Zombies, Cannibals and Rivals) will not notice you if you are in a Cardboard Box unless they have seen you outside of the box before, interacting with NPCs will remove the box so thread carefully.
- NPCs investigating will never notice you if you are outside their building, even if moving while on the Cardboard Box.
Trivia[]
- This may be a reference to the Metal Gear series, where cardboard boxes can be used by the player to hide in plain sight as long as they remain still.
